A method of preventing and remedying image persistence of a ferroelectric liquid crystal apparatus. A low-frequency ac voltage is applied to a ferroelectric liquid crystal apparatus, a multi-domain is formed in a pixel, the domain boundary is fluidized, and the domain region is made smaller. The low-frequency ac voltage has a frequency of 10 to 100 Hz and an amplitude of +/-1.5 to +/-3.0V and is applied for a predetermined period, for example, 30 seconds or longer. The low-frequency ac voltage is applied to the liquid crystal apparatus either just before the driving of the liquid crystal is stopped or just after the driving of the liquid crystal is started. When image persistence is sensed, the low-frequency ac voltage is applied.
