The gear selection mechanism detects (66) the force exercised by the gear selection lever (12) at its pivot (70,72) as the gear ratio is changed. The measured force is used to control an assistance mechanism (68) connected to the bottom of the gear selector lever. The pivots (70,72) supporting the selector lever are compressible, allowing forward and backward longitudinal movement. The movement operates electrical contacts (78,80), which control delivery of current to the assistance device. The assistance is provided by an electrically or hydraulically operated actuator coupled to the end of the gear selector lever.
