The water pump seal has an outer housing (28) formed from sheet metal, which is a press fit in the bore (29) of the pump housing (11). The housing (28) contains a flexible phenolic sleeve (43) with a compression spring (41) which keeps one end of the sleeve (43) against the inner face of the housing (28). The other end of the sleeve (43) is pressed against the sealing ring (42) which in turn is pressed against the ceramic thrust ring (44). This ceramic ring (44) is mounted in a rubber ring (46) which is supported by the inner housing (34) which is a press fit on the pump shaft (18). The axial extension (39) of the inner housing (34) is flare outwards to form a water thrower.
