PRODUCTION OF DIALKYLNAPHTHALENE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound useful as a precursor of naphthalen- edicarboxylic acid used for producing a polyester resin in high yield by reacting naphthalene with an alkylating agent in the presence of a catalyst. SOLUTION: A transalkylating reaction of an isomer of a dialkylnaphthalene with naphthalene is carried out to produce a monoalkylnaphthalene and isomers of the dialkylnaphthalene and the resultant reaction product is separated into naphthalene, the monoalkylnaphthalene, the dialkylnaphthalene and other components. The separated monoalkylnaphthalene fraction is then alkylated into a dialkylnaphthalene with an alkylating agent. A 2,6-dialkylnaphthalene is separated from the dialkylnaphthalene fraction to thereby afford the objective compound. The reaction is conducted in the presence of a catalyst of a composition comprising a synthetic zeolite substantially exhibiting an X-ray diffraction pattern with an interplanar d-spacing (Å) of 12.36±0.4, 11.03±0.2, etc.
