PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a split image excellent in appearance after coupling by split ting a print image exceeding the tape width under specified conditions in print ing a image combining input character, symbol and figure onto a tape. SOLUTION: A tape printer produces (n) split image data when a data is sorted into n groups (1<n, m<=n). When the basic dot width D0 of a basic image data is wider than the actual dot width W printable onto the actual tape width L and the respective split dot widths Dj (j=1-m) of m split image data arranged with m character strings are entirely narrower than the actual dot width W, the basic dot width D0 is assigned to n split widths Di (i=1-n, where Di<=W, and the sumΣDi=D0) including m split widths corresponding to m lines thus forming n split image data having split dot width Di.
