BEARING FOR A BALL AND SOCKET JOINT

An improved bearing (19) for use in a ball and socket joint comprises a generally cylindrical body having a recess (21) formed in one end thereof. The recess (21) defines a semi-spherical bearing surface adapted to engage and support a head portion of a ball member (16) of the joint. A plurality of lubricant passageways (22) are formed through the bearing (19). Each of the passageways (22) extends axially from the semi-spherical bearing surface to an annular channel (23) formed in the opposite end of the bearing. A plurality of grooves (24) are also formed in the opposite end of the bearing. The grooves (24) extend radially inwardly from the channel (23) to a central recess (25) formed in the opposite end of the bearing. The channel (23) functions as a reservoir for lubricant, thereby permitting the joint to be used without frequently re-injecting lubricant therein. An annular bead (26) is formed about the circumference of the channel (23) to provide a seal which prevents lubricant from escaping from the joint.
