PROCESS FOR DETERMINING THE TYPE OF CODING TO BE SELECTED FOR CODING AT LEAST TWO SIGNALS

A method is provided herein for determining the type of coding to be selected fo r coding at least two signals, in which a transformation of signals into the frequ ency domain is carried out and, starting from spectral values, a similarity measure i s determined on the basis of which one of at least two types of coding is selected . The invention involves the first step of coding at least one of such signals and the n decoding in that type of coding which is used in the case of determining a high similarit y measure, thereby generating at least one signal which is affected by coding error. Such s ignal which is affected by coding error and the associated signal which is not affecte d by the coding error are each transformed into the frequency domain. The respectively ac tually audible spectral components are either selected or evaluated starting both from the spectral values of the signal which is affected by coding error and from the spe ctral values of the associated signal which is not affected by the coding error using a listening threshold which is determined by a psychoacoustic calculation. The similarity me asure is then calculated on the basis of the audible spectral components of at least t he signal which is affected by coding error and the associated signal which is not affecte d by the coding error.
