PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new phytosphingosine exhibiting activities against acne, age spots, bacterial growth, fine lines and wrinkles, etc., capable of lightening or whitening skin and useful for cosmetics by introducing a specific salicylic acid residue to phytosphingosine. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I R is a (hydroxylated) 1-49C (branched) (un)saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group, a group of the formula: Y-O-(Ca Hb ) Y is H, a 14-22C fatty acid group of formula II [Z is OH or epoxy group; (x) is 12-20; (y) is 20-40; (z) is 0-4]; (a) is 7-50; (b) is 10-100}; R<1> is a (hydroxylated) 8-28C (branched) (un)saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group; R<2> is H, phosphate, sulfate, saccharide}. For example, N-[(1S,2S,3R)-2,3- dihydroxy-1-hydroxymethyl-heptadecyl]-salicylamide. The compound of formula I is preferably added to a cosmetic composition in an amount of 0.00001-3 wt.%.
