Sulfonated methacrylic monomers are claimed which are used to make polymeric materials with high refractive index. Sulfonated methacrylic monomers of formula (I) are claimed: R0 = a sulfonated group selected from: (1) -S-CH2-CH2-S-(CH2-CH2-S)n-R1 n = 0 or 1; and R1 = cyclohexyl or group of formula Ia; (2) group of formula Ib m and p = 0 or 1; and A1, A2 = O or S; and (3) group of formula Ic R2, R3 = 1-2C alkyl or aryl e.g. phenyl, or aralkyl e.g. benzyl. An Independent claim is also included for method for making said monomers. |
