Memory spaces are allocated as required, with each space (EM1 - EM4) having a header (E1 - E4) and a number of memory units (UM1 - UM4) corresponding to program execution. Each header contains a number of updated references from a full set of such references, which can at any given moment refer to a corresponding memory space. The headers (E1 - E4) are organized into a chain (Ch) which can be run through and in which existing memory space can be reallocated if the number of references to it has returned to zero, and a new memory space is required where the number of units required is equal or less than that of the space to be reallocated.
