A printer connected with a host computer to perform two-way communication comprises a nonvolatile memory for rewriting and reading the content stored in the host computer. An area for storing a plurality of types of information for specifying the printer is allocated to the nonvolatile memory. Each type of information comprises a key specifying the type of information, and a terminator indicating the end of the information. Information on a plurality of printers is located efficiently on the nonvolatile memory and alteration or addition of information can be done flexibly.
