PROCESS FOR PRODUCING POLYCARBONATE

A process for producing polycarbonate, which comprises preparing a polycarbonate prepolymer by prepolymerization and polymerizing the prepolymer in a solid state by using a catalyst comprising a phosphorus-containing basic compound in an atmosphere of a poor solvent gas. A preferable poor solvent is one wherein polycarbonate has a solubility of 0.1 % by weight or less, specifically a linear aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon bearing 5 to 18 carbon atoms. This process can efficiently provide polycarbonate having a high molecular weight and excellent qualities.
