[Class 31(i)] [Also in Group XXX] Milling - cutters.- Apparatus for finishing the three free edges of signatures in preparation for a book-binding operation comprises an assemblage of powerdriven rotary edge cutters, one for each free edge, and means to advance a stream of signatures past the cutters to present the edges to the cutters. Bundles of signatures S, held in skeleton pockets 24 by spring clips 25, are fed intermittently by an endless conveyer 22 and deposited on bars in front of a pusher B which advances the signatures along a table T past three continuously driven milling-cutters F which cut a straight edge. Each cutter F, which may have helical or straight cutting teeth, is enclosed in a casing 20 except for the cutting zone, and an opening 21 for connection in a suction line to evacuate the swarf. The vertical cutters F are mounted for equal adjustment towards and away from each other by means of spindles 2 in bearings 3 on slides 4 mounted to slide on V-guides 5 on on the table 6 of the machine, adjustment being effected by a rod having right and left hand screw threads operated by a hand wheel 7, and each cutter is driven by a motor 1 through a belt or chain 8 maintained taut by a jockey pulley 9 on an arm 10 urged to swing by springs 11. The horizontal cutter is similarly adjustable towards and away from the table. Holding fingers C for the signatures already on the table are provided for when the pusher B is retracted, the fingers C on arms 36 sliding on rods 37 being removed as the pusher advances and inserted, behind the new bundle of signatures, in grooves 27 in the pusher B, the pusher B and fingers C being driven by cams on a continuously driven shaft 35 to obtain synchronization. The conveyer 22 is driven intermittently from one wheel 23 which is geared through a geneva motion driven by a disc on the shaft 35, the conveyer moving during the operation of a dwell portion on the cam 34 driving the pusher B. A feeler device is provided, to feel the pocket 24 next arriving in front of the pusher B, which lifts and disconnects the driving bar for the fingers C from the arm 43 when no bundle of signatures is present in the pocket 24 so that the fingers C are not removed. To set up resistance to the advance of signatures under the cutters F, a delivery device may consist of an opening having resilient walls 61 or spring-loaded gates of metal or an endless conveyer 62 may be provided, having L-shaped platforms 65, each platform slicing off a batch of signatures, the size of each batch being varied, if desired, by mounting the conveyer 62 to swing about the axis of the wheel 63. |
