PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a resin having low crystallizability in spite of having low viscosity and having low mutagenicity by glycidylaling a compound obtained by reacting bisphenol A with an allyl halide to effect the Claisen rearrangement by reaction with an epihalohydrin. SOLUTION: There is provided an epoxy resin of formula I (wherein (n) is 0-1; X is a single bond, a 1-7C hydrocarbon group, S, O, SO, SO2 , CO, CO2 , or Si(CH3 )2 ; Y is H or a 1-4C alkyl; and R is H, a 1-6C alkyl, an aryl, or allyl, provided that 26-50% of Rs are allyl groups). It is desirable that this resin has a total halogen content of 0.000023 mol/g or below. This resin is produced by glycidylating a compound represented by formula II with an epihalohydrin (e.g. epichlorohydrin) in the presence of a catalyst, desirably, an alkali metal hydroxide (e.g. NaOH) in an aprolic solvent (e.g. dimethyl sulfoxide). |
