PURPOSE: To obtain the compound useful as a raw material for dye, pigment and as an intermediate for a raw material compound such as an intermediate for a raw material compound for a polyimide, etc., industrially, advantageously and in a high yield, by using readily obtainable nitrobenzene as a starting raw material. CONSTITUTION: (A) 1,3-Dinitrobenzene is reacted with (C) an alkali (preferably sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide) in (B) preferably a polar aprotic solvent or a polar aprotic urea compound (preferably N,N'- dimethylimidazolidinone or N,N,N',N'-tetramethylurea) as a solvent, then catalytically reduced with hydrogen and neutralized, preferably neutralized and catalytically reduced with hydrogen to give 3-aminophenol. The reaction between the component A and the component C is preferably carried out in the presence of a small amount of water or by adding a small amount of an amine or a sulfonic acid. |
