An electro-optical device has an electro-optical control element (E-1, E-2, E-3) positioned between two parallel primary lines (4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 4-4) for allowing a local second propagation mode and for controlling first propagation mode transfer between two waveguides by action on the second mode. An electro-optical device has a light waveguide layer (2) sandwiched between two confinement layers (1, 3), two first propagation mode waveguides defined at right angles to two parallel primary lines (4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 4-4) on top of the upper confinement layer (3) and an electro-optical control element (E-1, E-2, E-3) positioned for varying the coupling between the two guides. The novelty is that the electro-optical control element (E-1, E-2, E-3) is positioned between the two primary lines (4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 4-4) and is designed for locally allowing a second propagation mode involving both waveguides and for controlling transfer of the first mode between the two waveguides which border it by action on the second mode. |
