The device comprises one or more measurement sensors set back from the cutting head, that is away from the cutting direction. A sensor connected to the measurement head detects the force on it during the forward movement of the cutter. Typically the measurement heads are rollers arranged with their axes perpendicular or at an angle to the cutting head. A number of measurement rollers are arranged around the cutting edge of the bore head and are set back some 10 mm.
