PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect weights of paper and other print medium and control the print operation in accordance with the detected weights by providing a movable medium guide and a sensor responding to the travel of the movable medium guide. SOLUTION: Paper 26 is pushed toward a guide 40 as the paper advances toward a positioning roller, and the guide 40 is pivotally moved on a pin 56, thereby displacing a gate 62. Whether the paper 26 displaces the gate 62 or not and how much it displaces the gate 62 are determined by a weight of the paper reflected in the rigidity of the paper and the force applied on the guide 40 by a bias element 67. A displacement amount of the gate 62 is detected by sensors 64, 66 and is output into a printer controller to calculate a weight and a thickness of the paper 26. The print controller automatically controls print parameters determined by the weight or thickness of the paper such as fusion temperature, fusion pressure, transfer current, etc., using an output from a detector 60 and indicates them.
