PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a coating film of a metallic color which is of high saturation and excellent in hiding power and decoration by a method in which a coat of high hiding power, a high saturation coat containing a brightening agent, and a clear coat are formed on metal substrate by a wet on-wet method, and these coats are heated to cure simultaneously. SOLUTION: When a coating film of a high saturation metallic color is formed on a metal substrate, first, the first coat of high hiding power having a hiding film 50μm or less in thickness is formed on the substrate on which only an electrodeposition coating film or the electrodeposition coating film and an intermediate coating film are formed in turn. Next, the second coat of high saturation containing a brightening agent having a hiding film 50-300μm in thickness is formed on the first coat by a wet-on-wet method. Next, a clear coat having a hiding film exceeding 300μm in thickness is formed on the second coat by a wet-on-wet method. After that, the first, second, and third coats are heated to be cured. In this process, coatings for the first and the second coats are selected so that the Munsell value saturation of the final coating film is at the lowest 9.
