Each component (6) to be tested is scanned ultrasonically. The scanning device comprises a test head (3) with one or more ultrasonic emitters and receivers (4) arranged on its outer surface. The emitter-receivers are preferably a single combined transducer crystal. The component (6) may be scanned by rotating the head within it and moving the head up and down so that a full surface scan is obtained.
