PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electro-optic element relating to an electro-optical device and permitting a colorless display. SOLUTION: An electro-optic element has a liquid crystal cell having a refractive-index dispersion α1, a product Δn1.d1 of a refractive-index anisotropy Δn1 and a thickness of a liquid crystal layer d1, and a twist angle value of the liquid crystal as parameters, and having a compensating means arranged adjacent to the liquid crystal cell, and a polarizing plate and a reflecting plate arranged to hold the compensating means and the liquid crystal cell in-between. In this case, the refractive-index dispersion α1 of the liquid crystal cell, the value of Δn1.d1, and the twist angle value of the liquid crystal are determined, and according to these values, the values of the refractive-index dispersion α2 possessed by the compensating means and Δn2.d2 are set so that the luminous transmittance becomes about minimum. |
