One or more jets (1-4) apply a continuous stream of dye to a relatively moving surface. The jets are combined into an array (6) so the jets or array can be moved in synchronism with the moving product (5). The dye stream can be interrupted to apply lines of defined length, and several jets (1,2) can be interrupted in their flows in synchronism to give a series of single segments on the product. The dye flows can be interrupted by diverting these into a collector, using this to interrupt and then release the flow at certain positions. The flow can be passed through a ring electrode and so electrically charged for deflection by plates in synchronism with the moving product. Additional security dyes can be embedded in the dye flows.
