Prevention of buildup of lime scale on the cathode of electrolysis cells using hard water

Buildup of lime scale on the cathode is prevented by removal of newly deposited lime scale by rotating brushes before thick solid layers can be produced. The brushes are driven at 100 - 2000 rpm via a magnetic coupling avoiding having to create a seal where an axle passes through a reactor wall. The power to drive the brushes can come from flowing water. Both the cathode and the anode are disc shaped and the whole of the cathode surface is swept by the brushes while a constant distance between anode and cathode is maintained.
