Starting material is separated into coarse and fine fractions in a first drum sieve (1) and the fine fraction is divided again into fine and coarse fractions at a second drum sieve (12) with smaller holes. Ferrous metals and nonferrous metals, including aluminum drinks cartons, are removed from both of these fractions before they are further processed to separate plastics from non-plastics. An Independent claim is made for the process equipment which includes a first drum sieve (1) with holes 200-250mm, a second drum sieve (12) with holes 120-140mm in the coarse material line from the first sieve and a third drum sieve (26) with holes 50-70mm in the line for fine materials from the second sieve. Ferrous metal separators (4,13,23,24) are located in all three lines and nonferrous metal separators (14,25) in both the fine and coarse material lines from the second sieve.
