A procedure for obtaining derivatives of acetic acid, such as glycine, IDA and NTA by dehydrogenating mono-, di- and tri-ethanolamine, respectively, in the presence of a Raney copper catalyst. This procedure includes a stage consisting of regenerating the used catalyst in order to be able to reuse it in successive reaction cycles. The regeneration process consists of treating the used catalyst with formic acid under reflux, filtering it and digesting it with demineralized water and NaOH until the wash water reaches a slightly alkaline value. The regenerated catalyst may be reused in successive reaction cycles whilst maintaining an average yield of 87%, that is, of the same order of magnitude as when a new catalyst is employed.
|
