PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance color purity, to make possible light emission of high brightness and high efficiency with low voltage drive, and to enhance stability in repeated use by using a metal complex synthesized from a compound of specific constitution and a metal ion. SOLUTION: A compound used for synthesizing a metal complex is expressed by the formula. In the formula, R1 represents hydrogen atom or a substituent. The substituent is an alkyl group or the like. R2 represents hydrogen atom, an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, an aryl group, or a heterocyclic group. Z represents an atomic group required for forming five-membered or six-membered ring. Benzene is especially prefered for the ring formed by the Z. M represents hydrogen atom or a cation. Two-valent or three-valent cation is preferable as a metal ion for a metal complex, and Be<2+> , Mg<2+> , Al<3+> , Ga<3+> , Zn<2+> are more preferable. The metal complex is preferably used as an electron transporting agent or a luminescent agent, especially preferable as a blue light emitting agent.
