PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline secondary battery which is provided with a negative electrode having an AB2 type hydrogen storage alloy that has superior initial activation and cycle characteristics. SOLUTION: This is provided with a negative electrode 4, including a hydrogen storage alloy having a composition Zr, Ti, Ni, and at least Mn, V as a substitution elements of Ni, and that an eluting quantity of vanadium, when dipped in a potassium hydroxide solution with a concentration of 30 wt. % at 65 deg.C for thirty minutes is 3 to 10 wt.% to vanadium in the composition. The hydrogen storage alloy has a composition expressed by a formula (Zr1-u Tiu ) Niv-w-x-y Mnw Vx My . In the formula, M is at least one element selected from among Co, Cr, Al, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn, and u, v, w, x, and y are respectively 0.05<=u<=0.5, 1.8<=v<=2.5, 0.3<=w<=0.8, 0.2<=x<=0.7, and 0<=y<=0.5. |
