PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a separator for an alkaline battery which does not decrease in absorbency of electrolyte or rise in internal impedance and can lessen in separator diameter and can improve a battery life due to decrease in internal short-circuit. SOLUTION: This separator for a battery comprises a synthetic fiber, a cellulose fiber and a binder. An average pore size of the separator is equal to or less than 20μm. The entire pore volume by a method of mercury penetration is equal to or larger than 1.2 cc/g. All or a part of the synthetic fiber is made of paraffin-based aramid fiber in which freeness is equal to or less than 400 ml. This fiber is included 5 to 80% by weight of the separator.
