The unit has three sections. First, a coupler (1) that has two lenses (4) attached to optical fibers (5,6). These connect to a laser and to the spectroscope. The fibers split into two paths before connecting to the filter section (2). This is a rotating cylinder some 3cm diameter and 9 cm long that aligns different pairs of filters (10,12) with the two optical paths to allow selection of different wavelengths. The third section (3) is the prism unit.
