A variable displacement swash plate type clutchless compressor, wherein, when a thermal load becomes small, a passage (58) is opened by a control valve (81) to cause the pressure in a crank chamber (8) to increase and the inclination of a swash plate (10) to decrease, a cross-sectional area of the passage (58) decreasing due to the swash plate (10) when the inclination of the swash plate becomes minimal, to minimize a pressure decrease in the crank chamber (8), while the pressure in an accumulator (33) increases to cause a suction port (3a) to be closed with a spool valve (31), a refrigerant gas flowing at this time from the accumulator (33) to a suction chamber (13) through a groove (31a), whereby the inflow of the refrigerant gas from an evaporator (80) is prevented to allow the refrigerant gas to be circulated in the interior of the compressor, a mechanism for opening and closing the suction port (3a) being not required to be provided on a shaft (5), so that a suction chamber (13) can be provided on the outer side of a discharge chamber (12) in a rear head (3), a sufficient preload being able to be imparted to the shaft (5), so that the shaft (5) is axially stabilized.
