A process for producing tert-butyl 4'-methyl-2-biphenylcarboxylate characterized by reacting 4'-methyl-2-biphenylcarboxylic acid with isobutene in the presence of an acid catalyst. The process permits high-quality tert-butyl 4'-methyl-2-biphenylcarboxylate to be readily produced in a high yield in an industrially advantageous manner under mild reaction conditions including the ordinary temperature without resort to complicated operations and dangerous solvents.
