Preparation of multicoat paint for metal and plastic substrates comprises applying a base paint on an optionally pretreated substrate, where the base paint is the sealing layer and comprises: (A) a physically dried, water dilutable, OH-free polyurethane(s) as an aqueous dispersion; (B) a water dilutable, OH-functional polyacrylate, polyester and/or polyurethane as an aqueous dispersion; (C) a polyisocyanate(s); and (D) fillers, pigments and/or other additives and aids. The ratio of NCO groups in (C):OH groups in (B) is 1:5-5:1.
