The invention is a cleat system (20) that includes a shank (24) and a nut (34). The shank (24) includes a head (26) and a leading end (30) on the shank (24) opposite the head (26). The nut has a wall (40) which generally defines a bore (42) having opposed edges (46, 48) which define a slot (50) at least partially extending through the wall. Displacement structure (52) is provided on at least one of the shank and the nut which translates rotary and axial forces into generally circumferential and radial forces. Threads (60) are provided on at least one of the shank and the nut for promoting axial displacement. The nut includes threads (64) on an interior surface (94) of the wall which engages threads (62) on an external surface of the leading end (30) of the shank. Engagement of the threads causes the displacement structure to expand the wall of the nut to engage a bore of the workpiece in which the nut is inserted.
