The procedure involves stepwise control of the motor by application of electricity to each stator coil of the motor for a specified excitation time, depending on a number of excitation patterns. An excitation time for a first step longer than the specified excitation time is adjusted to the time of a detection of the first step position of the rotor, in order to execute the learning of the magnetic pole position of the rotor to detect and learn the position of magnetic poles that are provided in the rotor, on the basis of the output of a throttle opening sensor after the rotation of a first step and the coming to rest of the rotor. A current which is to be applied to the stator coils is controlled on the basis of a learnt value of the magnetic pole position of the rotor which is determined by the learning of the magnetic pole position of the rotor and the output of the throttle opening sensor.
