<p>An airfoil (20) is provided with a seamless control surface (30) which comprises upper and lower skins (32 and 38) fixed to a spanwise extending spar (24) and extending chordwise to a trailing edge (66) and having an outer surface which is substantially a continuation of the upper and lower surfaces of the airfoil (20). A joint mechanism (44) proximately attaches together the trailing edges of the upper and lower skins (32 and 38) while permitting relative chordwise movement therebetween. Actuating devices (60) ar e operable for selectively altering the curvature of the upper and lower skins (32 and 38) to cause deflection of the seamless control surface (30) between an extreme raised position through a neutral position to an extreme lowered position. In this manner, the outer surface curvature of the airfoil (20) and of the seamless control surface (30) is smooth and continuous over substantially the entirety thereof. The actuating devices (60) may be hydraulic, pneumatic, or solid state and the upper and lower skins (32 and 38) may be of composite material.</p> |
