Coarse comminution (7) is followed by screening (9). The coarse fraction is finely comminuted at high speed (17), and screened. All fines are united. Ferrous metals are magnetically-abstracted. Oversize from the finely communited fraction are separated into light and heavy fractions, the latter being freed magnetically (12) of ferrous and nonferrous materials. Glass and stone; wood rubber and leather residues result. Other residues include textiles and thick-walled plastics. These with other light materials are washed and further separated into paper pulp, plastic with specific gravity above and below 1, and textile flocs.
