The printing cylinder is provided with a covering (10) comprising a lithographic or printing layer (12). Beneath this there is a compressible layer (13) and an external reinforcing layer (14). The printing cylinder includes a channel extending axially, and inside the channel there is a retaining device for holding the ends of the covering which wraps around the rest of the cylinder. The reinforcing layer (11) lies against the surface of the cylinder, with the arrangement ensuring a uniform tension over the surface of the cylinder.
