The drive has a worm gear (6) connected to the steering column, and a torque sensor to detect the steering moment applied by the driver. A control unit controls the motor (7) in dependence on the applied steering moment. Some play is provided between the gear wheel (12) and the worm (13). The worm is mounted to be movable in the axial direction, and supported on the gear housing (18) in the axial direction by elastic resilient elements (22,23).
