A device has been developed for the separate or simultaneous measurement of the heat and water vapour dissipating properties of Patient Support Systems, e.g. specialised beds, mattresses, chairs, cushions and pads. This involves the generation of an atmosphere next to the PSS that can be controlled with respect to temperature and humidity. Using this tool the heat and water vapour transfer rates through the PSS can be measured, the resistance determined and the interface microclimate assessed. The device comprises a measurement block 1 and thermal guard 2 separated by an air gap 3. Heating elements 4 are affixed to the top surface of block 1 and the inside surface of the thermal guard 2. Water or fluid passes from reservoir 5 into a space milled in block 1. A waterproof/water vapour permeable membrane 6 and porous plate 7 is placed over the space. The device is used with plate 7 resting on a support surface.
