Vibration damper for the crankshaft of a piston engine

The crankshaft 3 of a piston engine is assembled with a vibration damper 10 into a discrete module prior to mounting of such module in axial and/or radial bearings of the housing 2 of the engine. The damper has an input element 11 which rotates with the crankshaft and a mass 15 which is angularly movable relative to the input element against the resistance of coil springs 18. The input element 11 can be provided with a sleeve 20 which surrounds a snout 6 at one axial end of the crankshaft. Alternatively, the damper can be installed in or on or can constitute a cheek (205, Fig 4) of the crankshaft. The coil springs 18 can operate in parallel with a friction generating device 25 which opposes relative rotation between the input element 11 and the inertia mass.
