A writing instrument (10) with an advance-retract mechanism is operable by rotation of a knob (46) opposite the writing tip. The knob rotates a shaft (16) disposed in, and extending rearwardly from, the instrument body to advance and retract the writing tip when rotated. A retainer member (28) has a first cylindrical portion (32) with a plurality of inwardly extending tangs (33) into which the shaft is received and a larger cylindrical portion (34) having a surface (36) directed toward the instrument body.
