PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a linear polymer having a low solubility and improved rigidity and flexibility by constructing the polymer from a rigid main chain comprising specific org. monomer units and soluble org. side groups. SOLUTION: This linear polymer comprises a rigid main chain comprising at least 25 org. monomer units selected from p-phenylene, p-biphenylene, p- terphenylene, 1,4-naphthalene, 1,4-anthracene, 9,10-anthracene, and 2,5-pyridine units and bonded to each other through C-C covalent bonds, at least 95% of the covalent bonds being substantially in parallel, and soluble org. side groups selected from polyfluoroalkyl, polyfluoroaryl, polyfluoroalkoxy, sulfonamide, and aryl ester units, etc., the number and sizes of the side groups being sufficient to make the polymer soluble in a polymn. solvent system. The monomer units themselves or the monomer units and the solubilizing side groups constitute monomer repeated units, and the polymer and its starting material are soluble in a common solvent. |
