PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the aggregation of a polymer is caused and the densification of a sintered compact is blocked when a slurry is dried at a temp. above the polymn. temp. of a phenolic resin. SOLUTION: A slurry prepd. by adding baron or its compd. as a sintering aid and a carbonizable phenolic resin soluble in water or an org. solvent to silicon carbide powder and mixing them is dried and the resultant powder is compacted and fired in an inert gaseous atmosphere to produce silicon carbide ceramics. In this method, the phenolic resin is added by 0.5-5 pts.wt. (expressed in terms of formed carbon) based on 100 pts.wt. silicon carbide powder and the slurry is dried at a temp. below the polymn. start temp. of the phenolic resin to form granules. The granules are compacted and the resultant compact is heated at a temp. above the polymn. start temp. of the phenolic resin to polymerize the phenolic resin. The compact is then fired in the inert gaseous atmosphere. |
