PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low cost recorder and a method for controlling recording capable of surely judging the presence or absence of an ink tank or ink irrespective of ambient conditions. SOLUTION: A first signal is obtained from a light received by a photodetector element 16 when a light is emitted to a light reflection plate 41 and an optical prism 42. A second signal is obtained from a light received by the photodetector element 16 when the light is not emitted to the light reflection plate 41 and optical prism 42. A difference between the first and second signals is obtained and is compared with a predetermined threshold level. The presence or absence of ink or an ink tank 7 is judged based on the compared result. |
