Rust remover and preventer

A method of removing rust from an iron or steel surface comprises coating the surface with an aqueous solution of a polyvinyl alcohol, allowing the solution to dry to form a film, and then peeling off the film. The solution may 5 - 20% polyvinyl alcohol by weight and the polyvinyl alcohol may have a proportion of free hydroxyl groups to all available ether groups of at least 70%. After stripping a second film of polyvinyl alcohol may be applied.
