A disc brake system (10) is disclosed having a caliper assembly (16) with a brake pad (20, 22) disposed on each of a pair of opposed sides of a rotor (12) and constructed to engage and apply braking forces to the rotor. Each brake pad comprises at least two individual pad segments carried by a backing plate (24, 26) with a sensor/actuator (34a-34j) disposed between each pad segment and the backing plate. Each sensor/actuator is connected to an electronic control (32) and is adapted to sense vibrations of the rotor. The electronic control is responsive to the vibrations sensed by each sensor/actuator and provides an electronic signal to each sensor/actuator in opposite phase relation to the vibrations sensed by the sensors/actuators to suppress the vibrations of the rotor and the associated noise generated by the rotor vibrations. |
