The aerial includes accelerometers enabling changing position of aerial to be monitored as image is constructed. The equipment includes a piezoelectric aerial with a single element which carries out measurement of distance normal to the aerial by determination of the propagation time of an acoustic wave. The two dimensional scanning required for the construction of a three dimensional image is ensured by the diver, who orientates the aerial in the direction to be observed and scans the aerial over points of interest. The spatial position of the beam w.r.t. a reference point is measured in real time with accelerometers attached to the aerial. This information allows determination of a three dimensional matrix within which an image of the object can be constructed.
