The inner and outer panels of e.g. vehicle doors are typically assembled by folding the outer panel's edges over those of the inner. Spot welding holds the assembled edges together while finishing processes are applied. To improve weld quality and reduce restrictions on sheet thickness and material, the invention proposes that the fold-over edges of the outer panel should take the form of a series of tabs or tongues (11), connected to the panel (10) by narrow necks, produced by cut-away indentations (12) on either side. These may be rectangular or curved; opt., the tab is trapezoidal in shape with a narrow connecting neck. |
