PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the operability of the telephone system where the conveniance of a transmission reception function of mail data is maximized in the telephone system that sends/receives mail data at dialing or during a speech. SOLUTION: When melody data and character string data are entered to a portable telephone set externally through external operation (110-140) and entering a dial command to call other telephone set (150), the telephone set encodes the melody data and the character string data into melody transmission data (180) and sends the encoded data to a telephone line network, together with a destination telephone number (190). As a result, a call signal with the melody data and the character string data added thereto is sent to a called telephone set through the telephone line network, a called party decodes the melody data added to the call signal to reproduce the data into a incoming call tone, then the called party can come to recognize the caller intuitively. Or a message from the caller is displayed on a display device for the confirmation of a message or the like. Alternatively, mail data consisting of a message and a melody may be sent during a speech.
