PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make instantaneously detectable the position of a space pattern by obtaining the size of the local feature of the assumed space pattern with an arithmetic unit provided on each local detector, and obtaining the overall size via the addition of the outputs of the arithmetic units. SOLUTION: The detected light quantities Va, Vb of two adjacent photo- detectors 10, 10 are inputted to each arithmetic circuit 21, and the current IOUT (feature signal) corresponding to the difference Vb-Va is outputted. When the photo-detectors 10, 10 exist in a bright region and an unbright region respectively, i.e., when a boundary line (feature section) exists between the photo-detectors 10, 10, the feature signal becomes the positive or negative maximum value. The arithmetic circuits 21, 21 arranged correspondingly to the assumed boundary line position are connected by wires 51, 51 in the vertical direction to add the currents IOUT. A maximum current detecting circuit 30 detects the wire 51 having the current value of the positive maximum value and larger than the prescribed threshold value among the wire 51, 51.
